The Solomon Islands and the Problem of Sustainability :: Environment Resources Essays

The Solomon Islands and the Problem of Sustainability Introduction In the South Pacific near Australia and Fiji lies another potential tale of natural resources lost, ecosystems destroyed, and species becoming extinct all due to man. The Solomon Islands are at the core of this story. These islands are in danger of losing some of their capital (social, economic, and natural). This potential loss of capital comes from mans short term thinking. In todays world of an everything quick and fast, mentality, lies one heart of the Solomon Islands problem. Nature and all of its many resources do not mix well with profits and greed in terms of long term sustainability. In order to sustain nature, serious management from its users is required. Unfortunately this management is not used or does not create profits for the many companies investing in the Solomon Islands. The Solomon Islands are threatened because of their limited natural resources they have to offer for revenue. The Solomon Islands receive one half of their gross domestic product from agriculture, fisheries, and forestry, and over 55% of the islands exports were wood (web page Solomon Islands). The Solomon Islands sell this wood to companies for a profit. However, this resource is not infinite. The trees have to be allowed to regenerate or else the product will disappear along with the revenue. The common sense approach allows for re-growth of the trees, but this is exactly what is not happening in the Solomon Islands. As written by Nicola Baird in her article "Unwisdom of the Solomons", Baird says that the sustainable rate of harvest of wood is 325,000 cubic meters per year. However Baird continues that the government of the islands has given logging permits to cut 4 million cubic meters per year. The Solomons are taking downtrees faster than they can regrow. Profits are continuing, but only for a few more years. The future of the islands wood supply is forecasted to be depleted in the next 15 years (web page Solomon Islands). In the meantime, the tropical forest disappears at an alarming rate which fattens the pocket book with money but steals money form mother natures pocket book. Loss of trees causes a chain reaction of destr uction in the Islands. Taking trees takes homes of many species, which in turn causes their death.

Racial Segregation And The United States Essay - 2136 Words

America was made up of power value, creating a barrier that indicates other races to be more superior then the other. People are divided into different races based on their genetic background. Social collaboration is what comes of such a divided racial community. Society has been tainted and brainwashed to believe people are defined by the color of their skin, which cause separation and borders to be created. Ethnicity and race are both socially constructed. Ethnicity has entities of race, however, it has more of a broad arena, ethnicity is made up of religion, nationality, heritage, and cultural practices. One racial group can contain a plethora of ethnicities. Demographics in America have been reshaped in the past century. With an expansive immigration rate, the United States has grown to be a diverse country. The United States is quickly moving from being a nation that has a White Majority and minority groups of different races and ethnicities to one in which no single racial or ethnic group will be in the majority (Wilson, Gutierrez, Chao 2013). Although many minority groups are continuing to migrate on to U.S territory, some have surpassed others making them the more dominant minority in America. Latinos have surpassed African America as the largest minority, and the portion of the country that is white has fallen from roughly ninety percent to sixty percent (Hajnal, Rivera 2014). Ideal Victim Essay - 2185 Words

For the purpose of this essay I will be considering Nils Christie’s (1986) concept of the ‘ideal victim’. In considering this concept, I will discuss what is meant by an ‘ideal victim’ and will also be focusing on the high profile Australian criminal case of Anita Cobby in Blacktown on 2nd of February 1986. Anita Cobby was only 26 years old when she was abducted, brutally raped and murdered by four ‘ideal offenders’. This essay will also consider, the ways in which the media and criminal justice system have constructed Anita Cobby as an ‘ideal victim’. Nils Christie explains that there are certain characteristics that make a victim an ‘ideal victim’. As stated by ‘†¦.Rock (2006), Institutional practices shape the public representations and private understandings of victims of crime’. For instance, in Australia there are many organisations that help victims and their families of serious crimes. An Analysis of Queen Gertrudes Position in King Ha Essay Example For Students

An Analysis of Queen Gertrudes Position in King Ha Essay mlets DeathUsually in a playwright, one of the authors objectives is to keep the viewer or reader confused or disconcerted about certain events in the plot. Certain characters in a play or story that have concocted covert schemes to perhaps murder or frame somebody, may have confusing effects on the viewer. Depending on the way the plan was developed in the plot the viewer may have to stop and ask themselves; who was involved; who was killed or framed; what events actually transpired; and what events happened after the murder. The viewer/reader is always trying to understand the events that have just recently taken place, or events that will take place in the play. Being careful not to miss anything the viewer/reader may overlook a fact that has slipped by them and unknowingly they relegate the major facts that will help them solve the mystery below those that are irrelevant to the topic. Sometimes in cases like this, the characters that are not guilty of the crime are mistaken for those who actually committed the crime, and vice versa. In some cases, a possible character is suspected of the crime and nothing more. In William Shakespeares Hamlet King Hamlet is murdered and the perpetrator is clearly defined, whereas one is not. Queen Gertrude, Hamlets wife is in question of being a plotter. It is definite that King Hamlets death was a premeditated plot, however it is not certain whether or not Queen Gertrude is an accomplice or not. The assumption that Gertrude does not know about her husbands murder can be heavily supported by factual details and just as well, the other side of the fence can be supported too. Although Gertrude does not actually say in words that she knew about Hamlets murder, several events that take place will lead the reader/viewer to believe that the Queen is just as guilty as Claudius (Hamlets murderer). King Hamlets death was a prearranged plot against Hamlet by Hamlets own brother Claudius. Claudius contrives a way to kill Hamlet while he is in torpor in his own garden. Claudius would then clandestinely pour poison in the Kings ear, killing him instantly. Claudius now aggrandizing his greatness rises to power as the new king. The people of Denmark oblivious to the treason of the estate now blindly follow the new king, Claudius. However one night in Denmark, the ghost of Hamlet appears to talk to his son, prince Hamlet to warn him of the treason that is at hand. However, in the ghosts description of his murder was there no mention that the Queen had any part of it. The ghost had only instructed that Hamlet avenges his fathers murder by killing Claudius, and he leaves Gertrude to heaven. Now furious and aware of what he is dealing with, Hamlet is determined to get revenge for his father. Queen Gertrude does not claim to be unaware of the murder she is just assumed to be unaware to the murder. The reader/viewers first inclination the she is not a part of the plot is when the ghost appears at night and speaks to Hamlet. The apparition discusses with Hamlet the distress he is in and how his own brother murdered him. Revenge his foul and most unnatural murderbut howsomever thou pursues this act, taint not thy mind, nor let thy soul contrive against they mother aught. Leave her to heaven (I.v.84-85). But in this quote does the ghost not talk about revenge on the wife, Gertrude. In addition, when recalling the fact that Gertrude remarried after two months of her husbands death, she is thought to be an accomplice. However, even Hamlet himself says as if an increase of appetite had grown frailty, thy name is woman (I.ii.145-146). .udee8205c2abfd330409bc837206467cf , .udee8205c2abfd330409bc837206467cf .postImageUrl , .udee8205c2abfd330409bc837206467cf .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .udee8205c2abfd330409bc837206467cf , .udee8205c2abfd330409bc837206467cf:hover , .udee8205c2abfd330409bc837206467cf:visited , .udee8205c2abfd330409bc837206467cf:active { border:0!important; } .udee8205c2abfd330409bc837206467cf .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .udee8205c2abfd330409bc837206467cf { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .udee8205c2abfd330409bc837206467cf:active , .udee8205c2abfd330409bc837206467cf:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .udee8205c2abfd330409bc837206467cf .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .udee8205c2abfd330409bc837206467cf .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .udee8205c2abfd330409bc837206467cf .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .udee8205c2abfd330409bc837206467cf .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .udee8205c2abfd330409bc837206467cf:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .udee8205c2abfd330409bc837206467cf .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .udee8205c2abfd330409bc837206467cf .udee8205c2abfd330409bc837206467cf-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .udee8205c2abfd330409bc837206467cf:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Apperance vs. Realty in Hamlet Essay In this soliloquy, Hamlet is referring to his mothers sex life. As if her appetite for sex had grown and that women need men to survive. Moreover, this is the reason that Gertrude remarried so quickly, not that she plotted against her husband so she could marry another. Another point is that during Hamlets time of madness (to determine the truth of the ghost) Claudius and Polonius plot against Hamlet. First, to eavesdrop on his conversations and then to rid of Hamlet in England, where two assassins are sent to aid in the death of Hamlet. During both times of the plotting the Queen was not present to confirm such treacherous acts. So once again the queen is not seen as danger to anybody, not even her late husband. Still unsure of the apparitions truthfulness, Hamlet devises a plan to observe Claudiuss reaction to a group of actors who come into the castle to perform an act called The Mousetrap. The play was a reenactment of the actual murder of a nobleman, in the same way Claudius committed his crime. Hamlet tells Horatio (Hamlets loyal friend) to watch Claudiuss reaction to the play as the murder took place. And indeed did Hamlet get a reaction. According to J. Dover Wilson:Hamlet never wanted to prove to the world that Claudius was his fathers murderer. Such a view would always leave at least a stain of suspicion that Queen Gertrude was implicated, and, indeed, until after the play scene, in the interview in his mothers closet, Hamlet himself is by no means certain that she has not been privy to his fathers death. But the ghost has bade Hamlet leave her to heaven, and therefore Hamlet has with great ingenuity devised the play to show Claudius that his guilt is known, but at the same time to make it appear to the scandalized court that it embodies his own threat to murder the present king. (Shakespeare for Students 75)Queen Gertrude is obviously not an accomplice, she merely was caught in the crossfire. Some may also believe that Gertrude had known about the murder initially. The speech of the ghost can have many different meanings. Another, which may be that the ghost leaves Gertrude to heaven because he is still in love with her, and he would not want to be the one who has to punish her for her sins. Of course, this far fetch idea may seem a bit too simple. But as Kenneth Muir states about the ghosts speech taint not thy mind, nor let thy soul contrive against they mother aught. Leave her to heaven: Gertrude is to be left to the prickings of conscience; but the meaning of the first four words of this sentence is ambiguous. They could refer to Hamlets attitude towards his mother, or they could have a more general application: he is to execute justice on Claudius, without allowing his own mind to become tainted with evil. (Shakespeare for Students 88)Mr. Muir indirectly applies the fact that maybe Gertrudes conscience is enough punishment for her, and that anything else would be too much. As for Gertrudes marriage status, remarriage after two months may be a short time. Not only was king Hamlet freshly buried when Gertrude remarried, but Gertrude married king Hamlets brother. but in Shakespeares time, it was considered a form of incest for a widow to marry her brother-in-law (Shakespeares Characters for Students 90). Another aspect to look at is the play that Hamlet devised to catch Claudius. When the queen in the play professes her love for the king, Gertrude states the lady doth protest too much, methinks (III.ii.230). This now allows the reader to begin to believe that maybe her love for the late king was a false love and not true. That perhaps some perversity may have persuaded the queen to plot against the king. Furthermore, after the play in the Queens closet, Hamlet goes to see Gertrude to talk to her and Gertrude decides to have Polonius hide in the curtains to eavesdrop, implicating the queen even further. Making it worse, Critics generally regard Gertrude as weakwilled, highly dependent on Claudius and easily manipulated by him. .u8d391e80a01c7d84c96f95728692db49 , .u8d391e80a01c7d84c96f95728692db49 .postImageUrl , .u8d391e80a01c7d84c96f95728692db49 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u8d391e80a01c7d84c96f95728692db49 , .u8d391e80a01c7d84c96f95728692db49:hover , .u8d391e80a01c7d84c96f95728692db49:visited , .u8d391e80a01c7d84c96f95728692db49:active { border:0!important; } .u8d391e80a01c7d84c96f95728692db49 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u8d391e80a01c7d84c96f95728692db49 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u8d391e80a01c7d84c96f95728692db49:active , .u8d391e80a01c7d84c96f95728692db49:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u8d391e80a01c7d84c96f95728692db49 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u8d391e80a01c7d84c96f95728692db49 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u8d391e80a01c7d84c96f95728692db49 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u8d391e80a01c7d84c96f95728692db49 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u8d391e80a01c7d84c96f95728692db49:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u8d391e80a01c7d84c96f95728692db49 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u8d391e80a01c7d84c96f95728692db49 .u8d391e80a01c7d84c96f95728692db49-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u8d391e80a01c7d84c96f95728692db49:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: It Is A Common Belief That The Decline Of Fatherhood Is One Of The Mos Essay (Shakespeares Characters for Students 90). If Gertrude can be easily manipulated by Claudius, then she is just as guilty as he is. Although Gertrudes being guilty or not guilty is still a question that is debated today between critics, there is enough evidence in the reading for the reader to determine the proper punishment. But the reader will often find perplexing and perhaps even questions without answers. Bibliography:Shakespeares Characters for Students. Ed. Catherine C. Dominic. Music As Resistance Wale Golden Salvation Essay Example For Students

Music As Resistance Wale Golden Salvation Essay This tape consisted of go-go based production. This had never been done before in hip-hop, this alone shows Wales resistant nature. He didnt want to conform to the typical production style that most rappers were using at the time of that release. Throughout that project, he consistently spoke completely truthfully about what he does, he never yapped about gunplay and drug-slinging, he never praised any of the negative connotations that are prominent in todays hip hop. One of the most prominent things in the hip-hop industry is the flashy lifestyle that most artists portray. The game is filled with chain flashing, money flashing, and braggadocio. Wale denies these stereotypes by constantly displaying his proper knowledge of simple etiquette, be it through his lyrics or his actions. To me, wale is a genius trapped in a game filled with fake gangsters and trend-followers. In a simple sense, wale is a trendsetter; he brings his own style to the table, he is his own man, which is something that is always preached in the rap game but barely ever put on display. I chose the song Golden Salvation because it speaks to the exact topic that I previously discussed. Basically, throughout the song, Wale explains how rappers boast diamond-flooded chains bearing the face of Jesus. But, while wearing these chains, the rappers arent serving Christ in any way, shape, or form. In fact, the Jesus piece is simply written off as another regular old piece of Jewelry. Salvation is defined as deliverance from sin and its consequences. They expect the chain itself, the diamonds, and shiny components to deliver them to new heights in life, they completely ignore the face that the chain consists of; hence the name Golden Salvation. With this line: N*gas use me to shine, I been helping you stunt, look, why hose rapping dudes anti hit me in months? Wale shows that he believes that these young men particularly black men should go to Jesus more often and ask him for assistance in life instead of placing their destiny on living the typical flashy lifestyle. He follows this up with l dont ask for too much, colored in Wows, women will play you close, ad them hungry Jokers will try and test yea, now yea confidence through the roof, still you show no respect kid, the good book said praise but you so stuck in your ways you got my image appraised. With this, hes saying that Jesus doesnt ask for much, Music As Resistance Wale Golden Salvation By Mudstone and their chances of getting robbed will increase. Also, he uses a play on words with praise. Implying that the bible tells us to praise the lord but instead, they get his an appraisal on a chain bearing his face. This song speaks volumes to the terrible trends the rap industry tends to set and cause millions to follow. It also showcases Wales ability to drop knowledge on important topics in the black community and also do it in an intriguing way that requires you to not only listen, but also deeply think about the lyrics. Lyrics: Pray Praises Give thanks To the Fad Holy Water Jesus piece But dont nobody want know Jesus peace, no N*gas use me to shine I been helping you stunt Look why these rapping dudes anti hit me in months I dont ask for too much Covered in Wows Women gong play yea closer And them hungry Jokers gong try test yea Now they bumping your record Yea confidence through the roof Still yea show no respect kid The good book said pray But you so stuck in your ways You got my image appraised Why you sinning out waiting Fornicating with women I sat right there on your table Dont bow your head for grace Though Im keeping you graceful .u34a13ffa2d51578b22cee16daa657c4a , .u34a13ffa2d51578b22cee16daa657c4a .postImageUrl , .u34a13ffa2d51578b22cee16daa657c4a .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u34a13ffa2d51578b22cee16daa657c4a , .u34a13ffa2d51578b22cee16daa657c4a:hover , .u34a13ffa2d51578b22cee16daa657c4a:visited , .u34a13ffa2d51578b22cee16daa657c4a:active { border:0!important; } .u34a13ffa2d51578b22cee16daa657c4a .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u34a13ffa2d51578b22cee16daa657c4a { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u34a13ffa2d51578b22cee16daa657c4a:active , .u34a13ffa2d51578b22cee16daa657c4a:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u34a13ffa2d51578b22cee16daa657c4a .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u34a13ffa2d51578b22cee16daa657c4a .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u34a13ffa2d51578b22cee16daa657c4a .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u34a13ffa2d51578b22cee16daa657c4a .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u34a13ffa2d51578b22cee16daa657c4a:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u34a13ffa2d51578b22cee16daa657c4a .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u34a13ffa2d51578b22cee16daa657c4a .u34a13ffa2d51578b22cee16daa657c4a-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u34a13ffa2d51578b22cee16daa657c4a:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The drum kit EssayBrothers was born to cheat Though I question who faithful Fast for me nope Blasphemy though Rap to it so racks up To match up with me froze How can a diamond supersede my wisdom I seen a reverend with five of me as he read his scripture This is bible readings to people with malice intentions With a Cuban attached On a secular scene I died for you all Now n*gas die over me Jesus piece Jesus piece Jesus piece But dont nobody want know Jesus peace Sierra Leone diamonds LA to New York got me?
